Made Like HimGalatians 4:19

Formed In You Is Not Formed By You

This message is for A woman of forty who has spent twenty years trying to become like Jesus by effort, has run out of effort entirely, and thinks the project has therefore stopped.

Packed room, windows open, hands up, and somebody near the front has been on the same two lines for about a minute and a half and the room is letting them.

She is forty.

Twenty years of trying to be like Jesus, and she means trying in the strong sense: reading plans, accountability, a discipline for every season, a woman she met with monthly for eleven years and never once canceled on.

And she had a lot of it. That is worth saying. She was good at it and it was not fake and she loved it.

Then four years of illness, and the illness did not take her faith and did not take her love for God. It took the effort. All of it. The capacity for the disciplines, the energy for the practices, the reserve that all of that ran on. She has about a fifth of what she had and every bit of the fifth goes on staying alive and being decent to her family.

So the project has stopped. That is how she thinks of it and she has never said it out loud, because it sounds terrible, and because the people who love her would rush at it with reassurance.

The project has stopped, because the person running it ran out.

If you built twenty years on effort and then lost the effort, you know exactly what the sentence is, and you know it is not a crisis of faith.

He puts the forming somewhere else

The weight first and whole, because on this site the honest paragraph comes before the good one and it never gets shortened.

What this costs is not the disciplines, though every one of them was a real love and every one of them is gone. It is the sense of a project underway. It costs you twenty years of momentum, which is a thing you cannot borrow back. It costs the monthly meeting, eleven years of it, which she could still do and cannot. It costs you the honest sentence, because saying the project has stopped in a room like this brings four people at you at speed. And it costs you the future, in the sense that you cannot picture what the next twenty years of being a Christian even look like without the machinery.

I am not calling that small and I am not putting it beside anybody else's, because on this site there is no ranking of what people carry and there never will be. Any word from God that needs your four years made lighter first is not one Scripture speaks and not one the Holy Spirit has ever carried.

And plainly, before we go on: if the stopping has taken you somewhere darker, as far as thinking your family would have a lighter arrangement without you in it, tell one living person today. Your doctor, the woman you used to meet monthly, or a crisis line where you live, 988 by call or text in the United States and its equivalent wherever you are. Scripture asks nobody to hold that alone, and the Holy Spirit has always moved through people who let somebody sing the same two lines for a minute and a half.

Now, Galatians 4, and read the preposition, because the whole thing is in the preposition.

My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you.Galatians 4:19

Until Christ be formed in you.

In you. Not by you. Paul does not write until you form Christ, and he does not write until you have become like Christ, both of which would put the work on the reader and would have been the natural way to say it if that is what he meant. Galatians 4:19 says neither, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does what is described there.

He writes about something being formed in a person, which is a passive construction with a location in it, and the location is the person and the person is not the workforce.

You are the place where the forming happens rather than the one performing it. Galatians 4:19 puts Christ being formed in you, and the Holy Spirit is the one named a chapter earlier as the one supplied to you.

Now the other half of that verse, which almost nobody notices and which changes the emotional temperature entirely. My little children, of whom I travail in birth again.

Paul says he is the one in labor.

That is a shocking image and he chose it on purpose. In a verse about becoming like Christ, the effort described is the apostle's, not the reader's, and he uses the most exhausting picture available and puts himself in it.

You have somebody else doing the travailing in that sentence. That is written into Galatians 4:19, and His Spirit in you is the one who carries out the forming while the labor belongs elsewhere.

Now let me be exact about what this does not say, because four years of good things have already been said over you in that room.

It does not tell you the effort comes back. It says nothing about your capacity, and I will not predict it, because what God does there is His, in His own way.

And it does not make the twenty years a qualification, and it does not make the four years a curriculum you are being graded on. Galatians 4:19 sets no standard you are behind on, and the Holy Spirit has never once run a course you failed. Being like Christ is not a bar you are under; it is a forming happening in a place, and the place is you.

And it is not a swap. Nothing here says losing the machinery is good for you or that the forming is compensation for it. Both are true at once.

You were never the one forming Christ in yourself. Scripture puts the forming in the passive with a location, and the same Spirit who was supplied is the one who does it in a packed room with the windows open.

The breakthrough

Galatians 4:19 says Christ is formed in you, in the passive, with Paul describing himself as the one in labor, and the Holy Spirit in you is the one who carries out the forming.

Look at what that leaves standing. It leaves the fifth of you and where the fifth goes. It leaves the disciplines you cannot do and the meeting you cannot keep, and I am promising you nothing about your capacity, because I would rather hand you a sentence that is still true in the fifth year than a warm one that is not true in this room.

But it takes the project apart in the right direction. You built twenty years on a machinery of effort, and it was good, and it was not fake, and the loss of it is a real loss. It was never the thing doing the forming. Paul locates that in a person and puts the labor on somebody else, and the preposition he chose was in and not by.

You are the place it is being formed, and it is being formed in you rather than by you. The word says until Christ be formed in you, and the Holy Spirit is the deposit on a forming that survives the end of anybody's machinery.

So put your hands up. The person at the front is still on the same two lines and the room is letting them, and the project did not stop when you did.

Declare this over yourself

This forming is yours in Christ and it is not a reward for twenty years of effort, and it is not compensation for four. What God does about your capacity is His to decide, in His own way, and nothing below asks Him for a return of it. Galatians 4:19 is the ground under these three lines, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the forming while somebody else does the travailing.

  1. Effort that ran out about a year ago, you were real and you were good and you have no authority to be the thing that did the forming. Scripture says until Christ be formed in you, and the word is in and never by. Stay gone; the preposition was decided before I was born.
  2. Sentence that says the project stopped when the person running it ran out, you are put out of this room in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is the one carrying out that forming, and Paul put the travailing on himself in the same verse, so what stopped was machinery and never the work. Twenty years of disciplines; the forming has a different subject.
  3. Father, You put it in the passive and You put a location in it and the location is me. I am saying one thing about Jesus that I want true of me and handing the rest of it over. Somebody at the front is still on the same two lines; the pearl was never an achievement and no oyster ever tried harder.
