Gathered UpPsalm 139:16

Eleven Bags On A Tuesday

This message is for standing at the sorting table in the back of a thrift store while a whole life comes in as eleven trash bags and is dealt with before lunch, at fifty eight, doing the same sum about your own

They come in through the back door on a hand truck, two at a time, and by the time the kettle has boiled there are eleven of them against the wall by the steamer.

Somebody's whole house. You can always tell, because a house clearance does not come in the way a closet clear out does. The bags are heavier and stranger. There is a good coat and a box of buttons and a cardigan that has been mended at the elbow by hand, and forty years of the same brand of talcum powder, and a pair of reading glasses in a case with the arm taped, and a hot water bottle cover shaped like a sheep.

Four of you get through it before lunch. Marion is on steaming. Dennis prices and gets it wrong and is told so affectionately and does not care. There is a radio, and somebody's grandson is doing work experience and has been given the shoes because nobody else wants the shoes.

A cardigan goes on the rail at four pounds. The buttons go in a bag on the bric a brac shelf. Most of it goes into the recycling bins out the back, because most of everything does, and nobody in that room is being callous about it. It is just Tuesday.

You are fifty eight. You have been doing this on Tuesdays for six years, and it has never once bothered you before, and today it does, and you know exactly why.

Because at some point in the middle of the third bag it occurred to you that you have eleven bags too. Probably nine, at a push. And there is not one thing in them, not one thing in the whole of your life, that anybody could put on a rail and point at.

No career worth the word. Nothing you built. Nothing anybody would ask you to come and speak about. Six years of Tuesdays here and a lot of shifts and a lot of quiet, and a very great deal of it went nowhere at all that you could show to a person.

Say the weight of it first

I am not going to move past that quickly, because moving past it quickly is how this subject usually gets handled and it does not help anybody.

The thing you felt at the third bag is not self pity and it is not a failure of gratitude. It is an honest observation about a real situation, and it costs something to make it. Looking at your own life with the same eye anybody would use on somebody else's, without flattering it, and then reporting what is there, is a hard thing to do and most people never manage it.

And it is heavy. Not lighter than somebody else's heaviness, and not lighter because there is still health enough in those arms to lift a hand truck. Just heavy, at whatever weight it actually is, which is the only weight anybody's ever gets measured at.

So before a single word about God, let that stand. There is nothing you can point to. You said it accurately and nobody is going to argue you out of it or find you a hidden trophy on the shelf.

You have nothing to point at, and Scripture never once asked you for anything to point at. Psalm 139:16 says the days were written before one of them came to be, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an unshowable life legible.

What is actually written down

Now, having granted all of that, I want to show you a verse that people quote for the wrong reason, and read the specific thing in it that answers you.

And plainly, before anything else: if the sum you did today has gone somewhere darker, as far as thinking the sorting table would run the same without you at it, tell one living person today. Your doctor, one of the four who get through it before lunch, or a crisis line where you live, 988 by call or text in the United States and its equivalent wherever you are. Scripture asks nobody to hold that alone, and the Holy Spirit has always moved through people who put the kettle on and keep working.

Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in Your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.Psalm 139:16

Most people reach for this verse to say that God knows the future. Leave that alone for a moment and look at the two details that actually matter here.

The first is what is in the book. Read it slowly. Not deeds. Not achievements, not output, not the things a life produced that other people could see. Days. The entries in that record are units of time, and the writing of them has nothing whatever to do with what happened during them.

You have every one of your days already entered in a record that never asked what you made of them, and that is the plain content of what is written rather than a comfort I am improvising in a back room. The Holy Spirit is the one who takes an old psalm and lays it over a person's own arithmetic, and He does not need you to feel differently about your life before the sentence is true of it.

The second detail is the timing, and this is the part that dismantles the whole worry.

When as yet there was none of them.

The record was complete before the living started. Every day written down before a single one of them had been lived, which means the writing cannot possibly be a review of what you did with them. A review comes after. This came first. Whatever that book is, it is not a report on your performance, because it was finished before your performance began.

You were written down before you had produced anything at all, and that means nothing you failed to produce could ever be missing from the entry. That is the order the word puts it in, deliberately, and His Spirit is well able to make a person believe a thing about themselves that their own eyes keep contradicting.

Gathered up, and what that means

There is a moment I want to put beside it, because the two of them together say the thing whole.

Five thousand people have eaten on a hillside. It has been a large and impressive day. And when it is over, Jesus does something that nobody would have thought to write down if it had not been so unlike Him to overlook it.

He tells them to gather up the leftover pieces, so that nothing is lost.

Not the miracle. Not the crowd, not the numbers, not the part anybody would put in the report. The fragments. The bits left on the grass that any ordinary organiser would have walked away from, and He will not have one of them lost, and He says so out loud in front of everybody.

Now be careful here, because there is a wrong turn available and it is the one everybody takes. The wrong turn is to say: and so your hidden good deeds are the fragments, and God will gather those up, and it turns out you did more than you thought.

That is just the same accounting with a kinder accountant, and I am not offering it to you. It would leave the measure exactly where it was and simply move your score up a bit, and next Tuesday you would be back at the bags.

What that moment actually shows is an instinct in Him. He is a person who does not let things be lost. Not because they were valuable in the way a report values things, but because losing is not what He does with what is His. You are held by somebody whose settled habit is that nothing of His goes in the bin, and that is what the word actually records rather than a nice thought about a picnic. His Spirit is the one who keeps a person while their own eyes are telling them there is nothing there worth keeping.

The breakthrough

So the turn is not that your life secretly amounted to something after all.

Please hear that clearly, because the easy version of this article would go looking for an achievement on your behalf, hold it up, and tell you it counts. That would be a lie dressed as encouragement, and worse, it would agree with the measure that is hurting you. It would say: yes, a life has to produce something, and here, look, yours did a bit.

Your life does not have to produce anything in order to have counted. That is the actual position, and it is not a consolation prize handed to people whose lives went nowhere. It is the arrangement, for everyone, including the ones with a rail full of things to point at.

You are counted, whole, at fifty eight, with nothing on the shelf and nothing on the record but days, and none of that is provisional on a late achievement. The word says every one of those days was written before the first of them arrived, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that land in a person rather than the strength of their agreement with it.

Nothing here predicts what the rest of your life will look like. I am not going to tell you that something is coming, and I would be inventing if I did. What is settled is what was settled before you were born, and it did not need the rest of your life to be different.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, at the sorting table or in the car afterwards, in the voice today has left you. The right to speak like this belongs to you because you are in Christ, and it is not something a life with more in it would have more of; the Holy Spirit is what makes a spoken word live rather than the conviction underneath it. And notice that speaking is allowed from exactly where you are. The psalmist wrote, I believed, even when I spoke, I am greatly afflicted (Psalm 116:10), which is a man saying a true and heavy thing and believing in the same breath, with no requirement to sound better first. So say these honestly, and however He answers about the years still in front of you, that is His and it always was.

  1. Eleven trash bags and a morning's work, you are the whole visible mass of a life and you were never the record of one. God writes days in His book and not achievements, and He wrote mine when there was not yet one of them to write about. What He has of me is every day I lived, and He had it in writing first.
  2. Fear that a life with nothing to show for it was a life wasted, you are answered in the name of Jesus. The word says every one of my days was written down before a single one of them happened, and His Spirit did not begin taking notice on the day I first became useful to somebody. I was counted before I could produce a thing, and the counting has never once depended on production.
  3. Lord, You keep an account I have never seen and nothing of mine has fallen out of it. I am naming one ordinary thing I did that nobody saw, out loud, in a back room with the steamer going. You have it already and You have always had it, and I am not handing it over to be graded.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
