A Cup Of Cold Water Is A Whole Category

This message is for A man of seventy-four whose life was small on purpose, who never led anything, and who has been doing the arithmetic on it since the funeral of a man who did.

The gravel road at the top of the field has a place where two trucks can pull in nose to tail, and that is where they end up most evenings, tailgates down, because it is the best view of the light going.

Three of them and a dog. Nobody has anywhere to be.

He is seventy-four.

They buried a man from over the ridge last month. Big funeral. Two hundred people, cars along the shoulder for half a mile, four men speaking and every one of them with something real to say. He had started a thing that is still running. He had a road named after him, more or less, in the way a road gets named in a place like that.

And he has been doing the arithmetic ever since. He has never said it out loud to the two men leaning on the other tailgate.

Seventy-four years and he never led anything. He worked. He was there. He did not start a thing, or run a thing, or speak at anything. If they buried him next month there would be about thirty people and nobody would have four men wanting to say something real, and the honest reason is that there is nothing to say. He was around. He helped.

He is not bitter about it, and that is what makes it stick. It is not envy. It is a straightforward comparison and he has done it about eleven times since the funeral, always at this pull-in, always at this hour.

If you have made your life small on purpose and then attended a big funeral, you know that arithmetic, and you know how reasonable it sounds.

He made a category out of the smallest thing available

The weight first and whole, because on this site the honest paragraph comes before the good one and it never gets shortened.

What this costs is not ambition. You never had much and you do not regret it. It costs the account. It costs the confidence that a small life on purpose is a life, which is a thing you had for seventy years and lost at a graveside last month. It costs the pull-in at the top of the field, which used to be the best half hour of the day and is now where you do sums. It costs the two men leaning on the other tailgate, a little, because there is a thing you cannot say to them. And it costs you a comparison that came out honestly and came out against you.

I am not calling that small and I am not putting it beside anybody else's, because on this site there is no ranking of what people carry and there never will be. Any word from God that needs your seventy-four years made lighter first is not one Scripture speaks and not one the Holy Spirit has ever carried.

And plainly, right here: if the arithmetic has gone further than a comparison, as far as thinking there would be less to arrange if it were sooner, tell one living person today. Your doctor, either of the two on the other tailgate, or a crisis line where you live, 988 by call or text in the United States and its equivalent wherever you are. Scripture asks no man to hold that alone, and the Holy Spirit has always moved through people who pull in nose to tail and stay an hour.

Now, Matthew 10, and I want you to see what Jesus does with the smallest thing He could find.

And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.Matthew 10:42

Look at how carefully He shrinks it before He blesses it.

Not a meal. A drink. Not warm, prepared, offered at a table: cold water, which in that country means the thing you hand somebody without preparation, straight from the jar. Not to a leader. To one of these little ones. And then the word only, which He puts in on purpose, as if to close off every possible upgrade.

He is deliberately naming the smallest transferable act He can think of. And then He attaches a promise that could not be larger: he shall in no wise lose his reward.

You are inside a sentence built around the smallest possible thing a person can do. Matthew 10:42 puts the word only in front of the cup and the words in no wise in front of the reward, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that off a hillside and lays it on a tailgate at the top of a field.

Now think about why He would do that. He is sending men out. He knows most of what will be done in His name for the next two thousand years will be done by people nobody records. So He creates a category, at the beginning, on purpose, for the smallest thing, so that nobody can ever stand at the back of a funeral and work out that they were not in it.

You have been given a category rather than a consolation. That is written into Matthew 10:42, and His Spirit in you is the one who makes an old sentence do its work at seventy-four.

Now let me be exact about what this does not say, because a month of good sentences has already been said at that pull-in.

It does not tell you that you did more than you think. I am not going to go through your seventy-four years looking for an achievement to hand back to you, because that is the same arithmetic with a friendlier answer, and it would leave the measuring machine running.

And it does not tell you the man from over the ridge was doing something wrong. He was not. He started a thing and it is still running and two hundred people came, and none of that is under attack here.

What it does is show you that Jesus went out of His way, at the start, to write the smallest act into the ledger Himself, in a sentence that has been read for two thousand years.

You were never outside the accounting, because He built the entry before you were born. Scripture puts a cup of cold water in the text with a promise attached, and the same Spirit who inspired it is the one who carries it to a man on a gravel road.

The breakthrough

Matthew 10:42 has Jesus naming a cup of cold water, adding the word only, and attaching a promise that the reward will in no wise be lost, and the Holy Spirit in you is the guarantee that the category is real.

Look at what that leaves standing. It leaves thirty people at your funeral and nothing much for anybody to say. It leaves the man over the ridge with his two hundred and his road, and I am promising you no reversal and no revelation, because I would rather hand you a sentence that is still true at eighty than a warm one that is not true at this tailgate.

But it takes the machine apart. You have been running a comparison that measures a life by what can be spoken about at the end of it. Jesus put a floor under that in advance, on purpose, with the smallest thing He could think of, so that a man who was around and who helped could not possibly be outside it.

It is already settled, all of it, and He wrote the smallest entry Himself. The word says he shall in no wise lose his reward, and the Holy Spirit is the deposit on a category built for people nobody says anything about.

So put the tailgate up when the light goes. The other two are still talking about a truck somebody bought badly, and the sum you have been doing measures the wrong thing.

Declare this over yourself

This standing is yours in Christ and it is not a report on what could be said at your funeral. What God does with any of it is His to decide, in His own way, and nothing below asks Him for a result. Matthew 10:42 is the ground under these three lines, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes the smallest sentence Jesus could build and puts it in a man's mouth on a gravel road.

  1. Arithmetic I have done eleven times since that funeral, you are honest and you have no authority to be the measurement that counts. Scripture has Jesus naming a cup of cold water and saying the reward is in no wise lost. Add it up at this pull-in; He built the floor before I was born.
  2. Idea that a life is measured by what can be said about it at the end, you are put off this road in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries a two thousand year old sentence up a field, so being around and helping is a category God wrote and not a thing I settled for. Two hundred came for him; the cup is in the book.
  3. Father, You shrank it as far as it would go and then You attached the largest promise You had. I am naming one ordinary thing nobody saw and I am not apologizing for the size of it. The light is going over the ridge; the shelters are on the map with no names on them.
