There is a low table and four of them around it and a plate with dates on it and bread that somebody's mother made, and the lamp is on the floor so the light comes up rather than down, which makes everybody look kinder.
They have done this on a Tuesday for a very long time. Nobody organized it. It became a thing.
He is sixty.
They pray for about twenty minutes at the end, badly, the way people pray who have been doing it together for decades: interrupting, laughing, forgetting names, one of them always falling asleep for a moment and denying it.
And on the way home, walking, he does the sum he has been doing since his birthday in March.
Thirty years of this. Thirty years of praying for the same handful of people and the same handful of situations. Every Tuesday, and most mornings on his own besides, and the whole of a life spent on something with no output he can point at.
He cannot name one result. Not one. He is an honest man and he has tried, walking home, to construct a single example he could put in front of somebody, and every time he starts one it dissolves, because how would he know.
Thirty years, and nothing you could show anybody.
If you have prayed for years with nothing to point at, you know that sum, and you know it does not feel like doubt. It feels like accounting.
The record was being made in the room
Weigh it first and at its own size, because on this site the honest paragraph comes before the good one and it never gets shortened.
What this costs is not results. It is the confidence that the thirty years were a thing at all. It costs you the ability to answer a simple question from a younger man about whether it works. It costs the walk home, every Tuesday, which used to be the best part. It costs the birthday in March, which started this. And it costs you the private suspicion that a life can be spent carefully on something and produce nothing, and that yours is the demonstration.
I am not calling that small and I am not putting it beside anybody else's, because on this site there is no ranking of what people carry and there never will be. Any word from God that needs your thirty years made lighter first is not one Scripture speaks and not one the Holy Spirit has ever carried.
And plainly, before we go on: if the sum on the walk home has gone somewhere darker, as far as thinking the Tuesday table would be no different without you at it, tell one living person today. Your doctor, one of the three at that table, or a crisis line where you live, 988 by call or text in the United States and its equivalent wherever you are. Scripture asks no man to hold that alone, and the Holy Spirit has always moved through people who keep turning up on a Tuesday.
Now, Malachi, and it is a short verse and almost nobody has been shown it.
The setting is bad. It is the end of the Old Testament, the temple is running on habit, and there is a group of people in the background who have kept something going while everybody around them has concluded it is pointless.
Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name.Malachi 3:16
Read what is happening in the two halves of that verse.
In the first half: some people talk to each other. That is all. There is no revival, no result, no institution founded, no outcome recorded anywhere. They spoke often one to another.
In the second half: God is listening, and a book is being written, at that moment, in that room, while the talking is going on.
You are inside the half of the verse nobody looks at, and the record was being made while it was happening. Malachi 3:16 has the writing occurring during the talking rather than afterward as an assessment, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a scene from the end of the Old Testament and lays it on a low table with a lamp on the floor.
Now, what the book is called, because the name is the whole gift. A book of remembrance. Not a book of results. Not a ledger with an outcomes column. Remembrance, which is a record of what happened rather than a measurement of what it achieved.
You have thirty years entered in a book whose title has nothing to do with output. That is written into Malachi 3:16, and His Spirit in you is the one who makes an unmeasurable thing land as a fact rather than as a consolation.
Now let me be exact about what this does not say, because thirty years of good sentences have already been said at that table.
It does not tell you the prayers worked in any way you could demonstrate. There is no promise here that you will be shown a result, and I am not going to invent one, and I am not going to go looking through your thirty years for an achievement to hand you either, because that would be exactly the same accounting with a kinder total at the bottom.
And it does not tell you to stop asking how you would know. You would not know. That remains true. What changes is that the not knowing is a fact about your visibility rather than a fact about whether anything happened.
You were never asked to produce a demonstration of a thing God says He wrote down Himself. Scripture says a book of remembrance was written before Him, and the same Spirit who searches all things is the one who carries that from a bad century to a walk home.
Malachi 3:16 says the LORD listened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before Him for those who feared Him and thought upon His name, and the Holy Spirit in you is the guarantee that thirty years of Tuesdays are in it.
Look at what that leaves standing. It leaves the fact that you cannot name a result. It leaves the honest answer you would have to give to a younger man, and I am not going to promise you an outcome or a sign or a satisfying story, because I would rather hand you a sentence that is still true at eighty than a warm one that is not true on the walk home.
But it moves what is being counted. You have been running an outcomes column because that is the only column anybody ever shows you. God kept a remembrance instead, and He kept it live, in the room, while four people were interrupting each other and one of them was falling asleep and denying it.
You have thirty years of it written down already, and He did the writing. The word says a book of remembrance was written before Him, and the Holy Spirit is the deposit on a record you were never given the ability to audit.
So go on Tuesday. Take the long way home if you like. The sum you keep doing is accurate and it is the wrong book.
Declare this over yourself
This standing is yours in Christ and it is not a report on what your thirty years produced. What God does with any of it is His to decide, in His own way, and nothing below asks Him for a result or predicts one. Malachi 3:16 is the ground under these three lines, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a scene from a bad century and sets it down on a walk home.
- Sum I have been doing since my birthday in March, you are accurate and you have no authority to be the only account. Scripture says a book of remembrance was written before Him while people were simply talking to each other. Add it up again if you like; you are reading the wrong ledger.
- Suspicion that a life can be spent on nothing and mine is the demonstration, you are put off this road in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is the one who keeps an entry while the entry is happening, so thirty years of Tuesdays are recorded and not merely remembered kindly. I cannot name one result; He named the book after remembering.
- Father, You listened, and You heard it, and You wrote it down while we were still interrupting each other. I am naming one ordinary thing nobody saw and I am not explaining it to You. The lamp is on the floor so the light comes up; the book was open the whole time.
