In Secret Is Where Most Of It Happened

This message is for A man of fifty-two whose whole working life was done behind a wall where nobody could see it, and who has no story anybody would want to hear.

Strung lights across a courtyard, two tables pushed together, and somebody's speaker on a windowsill playing something nobody chose.

The food keeps coming. That is how it works here. Nobody sits down properly until about ten.

Fifty-two.

There is a young man at the far end, his cousin's son, who is doing well and who is telling everybody about it and who deserves to, because he has worked and it is good news and the whole table is delighted.

And someone turns and asks him, kindly, over the noise: what about you, what did you do all those years.

He says the name of the company and the word maintenance, and the person nods and it moves on, because that is what happens, and it is nobody's fault.

Thirty years of nights, mostly. Plant rooms. Roof spaces. A basement with a boiler the size of a car. He kept a building running for thirty years and the entire measure of doing it well was that nobody upstairs ever knew he existed. If they knew his name it meant something had gone wrong.

He is not resentful. He liked the work.

But sitting under the lights with the food coming, he does the sum he has been doing since the young man started talking, which is that there is no story. Nothing happened that anybody could tell. Thirty years occurred behind a wall and produced no account of themselves.

If your work happened where nobody could see it, you know that question at a table, and you know the two words you answer it with.

Seeing in secret is where He is described as standing

Weigh it first and whole, because on this site the honest paragraph comes before the good one and it never gets shortened.

What this costs is not recognition. You never wanted much. It costs the existence of an account. It costs you the ordinary human ability to answer a question at a table with something that goes anywhere. It costs thirty years, which were real years with cold nights in them and things you fixed at four in the morning that a thousand people used at nine. It costs the standard you worked to, which was that success meant invisibility. And it costs you a sum under strung lights while somebody young and deserving is being congratulated.

I am not calling that small and I am not putting it beside anybody else's, because on this site there is no ranking of what people carry and there never will be. Any word from God that needs your thirty years made lighter first is not one Scripture speaks and not one the Holy Spirit has ever carried.

And plainly, before we go on: if the sum has gone somewhere darker, as far as thinking this table would be no different without you at the end of it, tell one living person today. Your doctor, the cousin who put the lights up, or a crisis line where you live, 988 by call or text in the United States and its equivalent wherever you are. Scripture asks no man to hold that alone, and the Holy Spirit has always moved through people who keep bringing the food out.

Now, Matthew 6, and read what Jesus assumes about God rather than what He commands about us.

But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: that thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.Matthew 6:3-4

Thy Father which seeth in secret.

That is not an instruction. It is a description. Jesus is telling people to do things quietly, and the reason He gives is not that quietness is a virtue in itself. The reason is that there is somebody whose habit is seeing what happens where nobody is looking, and He names it as one of the Father's characteristics, in passing, as a settled fact.

You are inside a sentence that describes God by the place He looks. Matthew 6:4 calls Him the Father which seeth in secret, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a line from a hillside sermon and lays it on a courtyard with the lights strung across it.

Now, why that matters to a man who worked nights. Jesus is not saying God will find out about your secret. He is saying secret is where God already is. It is not a place God has to be told about; it is His own described position.

Which means the plant room at four in the morning is not a place your work fell out of the record. It is the exact location the verse names.

You have thirty years in the one place Scripture says the Father is looking. That is written into Matthew 6:4, and His Spirit in you is the one who makes an old description of God land at the end of a long table.

Now let me be exact about what this does not say, because a whole evening of good things has already been said in that courtyard.

It does not tell you that a story is coming. Nobody is going to stand up and tell that table what you did, and I am not going to promise you that anybody ever will, because that is a comfortable thing to say and I do not know it.

And I am not going to construct a story for you out of your thirty years, either. That is the same problem with a nicer shape, and the guardrail on this whole subject is that a life does not have to produce an account of itself in order to have counted.

The word reward is in that verse and I am not going to turn it into a prediction of anything you can see. What that reward is and when it arrives is His, in His own way, and it is not a promise about a table in a courtyard.

You were never required to produce an account in order to have been seen. Scripture describes the Father as the one who sees in secret, and the same Spirit who inspired it is the one who carries that into a plant room and a courtyard alike.

The breakthrough

Matthew 6:4 describes the Father as the one who sees in secret, and the Holy Spirit in you is the guarantee that the description covers thirty years of nights.

Look at what that leaves standing. It leaves the two word answer you give at tables. It leaves the young man at the far end, who deserves every bit of it, and the fact that there is no story anybody could tell, and I am promising nothing about that, because I would rather hand you a sentence that is still true at the next family thing than a warm one that is not true tonight.

But it moves where secret sits. You have been treating it as the place your work disappeared. Jesus uses it as the place the Father is standing, and He uses it in passing, as a thing everybody in the audience is expected to accept without argument.

You were seen, all thirty years, and secret is the name of the room He is in. The word says thy Father which seeth in secret, and the Holy Spirit is the deposit on a record that never needed an account of itself.

So sit down properly at ten. The food is still coming and the speaker is playing something nobody chose, and the plant room was never off the map.

Declare this over yourself

This standing is yours in Christ and it is not a report on what anybody at that table knows about you. What God does with any of it is His to decide, in His own way, and nothing below asks Him for recognition or a date. Matthew 6:3-4 is the ground under these three lines, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a description of the Father and puts it in a man's mouth under strung lights.

  1. Wall I worked behind for thirty years, you are brick and you have no authority over what gets seen. Scripture calls Him the Father which seeth in secret, and secret is where He is described as standing. Keep the plant room dark; He was in it before I was.
  2. Sum I have been doing since the young man started talking, you are put out of this courtyard in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries a hillside sentence into a basement at four in the morning, so producing no account is a fact about walls and never a fact about what happened. Success meant nobody knew my name; He knew the room.
  3. Father, You are named by where You look, and the place You look is the place I worked. I am naming one ordinary thing nobody saw and I am not telling You that nobody knew. The food is still coming and nobody sits down until ten; the top side of the vault was carved properly too.
