It took two of them about forty minutes, and most of that was the turn at the bottom of the stairs. The dining table went against the wall. The armchair went into the hall for now, which means the hall is not really a hall any more. Somebody said, cheerfully, that at least you get the good window, and they meant it kindly and it is even true.
And then everybody went home and the room was quiet and there was a bed in it.
That is the part nobody has words for. Not the pain, which people ask about, and not the appointments, which people ask about too. The bed in the front room. The lamp on the low chest where the fruit bowl used to be. The light switch that is now in completely the wrong place for a person lying down. All of it arranged sensibly by people who love you, and all of it saying the same sentence in a very quiet voice.
This is the only body you have ever had, and it does not work.
You are not being dramatic. It genuinely does not do the things. It is getting worse rather than better and everybody involved knows it, and somewhere in the last few years you stopped being a person who was ill and started being a set of arrangements. And what you would like, more than almost anything, is for one person to look at that and not immediately reach for something to make it smaller.
Nothing here is going to shrink this
So I am not going to. Not one line of this makes today lighter than it is.
That bed is a loss and it should be named as one. The stairs are gone and the room they were leading to is gone with them, and the version of a day that involved going up them has quietly closed. People will tell you it could be worse. Some of them will tell you it is only furniture. It is not only furniture, and you are allowed to know that it is not, and God is not embarrassed to be in a front room with a person who is grieving a staircase.
You are not less of anything tonight. Not less useful, and not less His, and usefulness was never how any of that was measured in the first place. That is not me being nice to you; it is what the word says about a person in Christ, and the Spirit is the one who makes it hold when a room has been rearranged around your body.
Now, having weighed today at its actual weight, look at what is written about this body. Not a comforting idea about bodies in general. About this one.
So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable. It is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body.1 Corinthians 15:42-44
Read the grammar of that carefully, because the grammar is the whole comfort. It is the same subject the whole way through. It is sown, and it is raised. Not: this one is discarded and a better one is issued. The seed that goes into the ground and the thing that comes up are one continuous story, and Paul is deliberately talking about a body, in weakness, actually failing, and he does not flinch at the word weakness and neither should we.
You are the same subject the whole way through that sentence, sown and raised. First Corinthians 15:42 keeps one subject across both verbs, and the Holy Spirit in you is the deposit on the raising.
Doctrine, not consolation
There is a difference between doctrine and consolation, and it matters enormously here.
Consolation is what people hand you at the door when they cannot stay. It is offered instead of the present. Doctrine is different: it is a fact about reality that stands whether or not it makes you feel better this evening, and it does not ask you to trade today for it. What is written about the resurrection of the body is doctrine. You do not have to feel consoled by it tonight for it to be true, and you are not failing at anything if it does not touch the ache in the room.
And I will be plain about what this does not say, because you have been promised things before by people who meant well. Nothing here predicts your body. Nothing in this message says the stairs come back, or that this turns around, or that a change is on the way. Anyone who tells you that has gone past what they were given to say. What God has actually settled is what He has settled, and the Spirit does not need anybody to add to it in order to make it land.
What He has settled is this: the body sown in weakness is the one raised in power. Your name is on that sentence. It is not attached to your capacity, your prognosis, your independence, or how much of a day you can manage this week, because none of those were ever the qualification. You are His, in a bed in a front room, with the light switch in the wrong place.
And if the weight of this has got to the point where staying here feels like too much, please say so out loud today to one real person, and let them stay near you: a district nurse, your doctor, someone in the house, someone on the phone. If it goes further than that, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number wherever you are, tonight. Nothing about reaching for help is a failure of faith, and using every bit of care and medicine available to you is not a lack of anything. Nowhere is it written that a person should carry this on their own, and the Spirit has always moved through people who turn up.
You have a doctrine rather than a consolation, and it was written down long before that bed came downstairs. First Corinthians 15:44 says it is sown a natural body and raised a spiritual body, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a written thing land in a front room.
So you are going to say something out loud in that front room tonight, and it is going to have two halves.
You have the standing to do it, and it does not rest on how much of you is working. It rests on Christ, who took you into Himself, and the word in your hands is the same word the Spirit has used on every believer who ever lay in a room they did not choose. That is a long line of people and you are not at the back of it.
What is asked of you is very small, deliberately. Jesus said that the moving of a mountain does not run on the size of what a person can summon, and that the mechanism is speech: you say it to the thing rather than think it about the thing. You have breath tonight. That is the whole requirement, and if your voice is thin then thin is fine, because volume was never in the instructions.
Say the true thing about the body. Then say the settled thing about it. In that order, out loud, in the room with the bed in it.
You were sown and you are raised, and God is the subject of both. First Corinthians 15:43 says it is sown in weakness and raised in power, and the Holy Spirit is the guarantee of the second half of that line.
Declare this over yourself
Say them out loud, in the room where the bed is. You are not making a claim of your own here: you speak as an ambassador carrying what your King has already said, with Scripture holding the words up and the Spirit making them live. Nothing in them describes what happens to your body in this life, because that was never ours to describe, and we leave the outcome to Him. We say what He settled. He does the rest.
- Body I have had all my life, you are failing and you are not disposable. God formed you and Scripture says what is sown is raised, and He has never once looked at you as a mistake.
- Sum I keep doing in the dark, you are not the account God keeps and you have no authority to total me up. He calls me His and the word ties none of that to what I can lift, and in the name of Jesus I put your figures down.
- Lord, You made this body and You have already said what becomes of it, and You have not revised a word while it got worse. You are here in a front room with a bed in it, and I am holding what You settled instead of what I can manage.
