Renewed Each Day2 Corinthians 4:16

The Pencil Mark in Bar Thirty-Four

This message is for the new pencil mark drawn in the middle of a phrase where you never used to breathe, put there quietly so that nobody in the second row notices what it means

Second row, alto side, third chair in from the aisle, and she has sat in it for thirty-one years.

They are working the long phrase again, the one that goes right through to the end of the line, and the conductor wants it in one breath because it is written in one breath. Everybody around her takes it in one breath. Thirty-one years ago she used to take it in one breath with room to spare and enough left over to lift the last note.

Tonight she takes a small breath in the middle of bar thirty-four. Then, while they are running it again, she picks up the pencil from the ledge and makes a tiny comma above the stave, right where she took it, so that next week she does not have to find out again in front of everybody.

That is what it comes down to in the end. Not a scan, not a letter, not a conversation with anybody in a white coat. A pencil comma above bar thirty-four, half a millimeter of graphite, and she is the only person in the room who knows what it says. If you are living inside a body that is going the wrong way, you have your own version of that comma somewhere, and you can probably say the month it appeared. And here is the question you have stopped asking out loud, because of the way people answer it: is anything at all going the other way, or is the whole of this just subtraction from now on?

The first column, at full weight

Before one word about anything else, let us weigh what is actually happening, because I have no intention of walking past it to get to the encouraging part.

It is a real loss. The breath was yours and now it is not. The stairs were nothing and now they are something. The handwriting was yours and now it is somebody's approximation of it. Whatever your list is, it is accurate, it is getting longer, and the people who love you keep saying that it could be worse, which is a true sentence that has never once helped anybody. Hating it is permitted here. Nothing in this article requires anybody to be philosophical about a body.

And I am not going to explain it to you. I do not know why, I will not invent a reason, and I refuse to hand you a purpose for it and call that comfort.

What I will do is tell you what else is true on the same days. You are being renewed on the inside right now, on this exact evening, on the same evening the comma went into bar thirty-four. That is not my optimism. It is written in Scripture in a sentence that holds both facts at once, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying out the renewing part while nothing at all improves in the other column.

Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.2 Corinthians 4:16

Two columns, one day, and not a trade

Look at how that sentence is built, because the grammar is the doctrine.

Paul does not say the outer is wasting so that the inner is renewed. He does not say the inner renewal makes up for the outer loss, and he does not weigh them against each other on a scale to see which wins. He puts them side by side in the same breath, on the same day, in the same person, and he uses the word though, which is the word you use when two things are both true and neither one cancels the other.

So nobody here is offering you a swap. This is not the deal where you hand over your breath and receive spiritual depth in exchange, and if anybody has offered you that deal I would understand you being furious about it. You have not been asked to trade anything, and what God is doing in you is an addition and not a payment. The word says both things about the same person on the same day, and His Spirit is at work in the part of you that no scan reaches, whether or not the other column does anything but lengthen.

Day by day is the small print and it is the good part

The phrase is day by day. Not once, not at the beginning, not at the end. Daily, in installments, on ordinary Thursdays.

Which means the renewal is happening at the same rate the loss is, and on the same calendar. Every day the pencil marks accumulate is a day the other work goes on too, quietly, without a single measurable sign, and with nothing you can point to at a rehearsal. It does not announce itself. It never has.

You have been worked on every single day of this, including the ones you have no memory of getting through. That is the promised pattern in the written word, and it is the Holy Spirit who does it, at His own rate, without asking your body's permission first.

The one who is still saying something

There is a psalm written by somebody old enough to be frightened about it. He says do not cast me off in the time of old age, do not forsake me when my strength is spent, which is an honest prayer from a man who is losing things and knows it.

And then, a few lines later, he says what he is still doing: even to old age and gray hairs, God, do not forsake me, until I declare Your might to the next generation.

Declare. Not perform, not sustain the long phrase, not hold the note. Say something true out loud. That is the one thing that does not depend on lung capacity, and it is why this page ends the way it ends. A sentence spoken in a shortened breath is a whole sentence in Heaven, and there is no reduced version of it. You have a voice for exactly this, and the Word never once made the volume or the length of a phrase the measure of it. His Spirit is what carries a spoken word, and He has never needed anybody to get to the end of a line in one go.

And if today is heavier than a page can hold, please tell a person. In the United States 988 answers by call or text at any hour, and elsewhere your emergency number or a national support line will do the same. There is no version of this where you are meant to be carrying it on your own tonight.

The breakthrough

So we are going to put both facts in the same room and let them stand there together.

The comma is in bar thirty-four and it is staying, and I have no prediction to make about your body and I am not going to invent one. And you are being renewed inwardly today, on this evening, in the part of you that outlives the phrase you can no longer hold. Scripture says it in the same sentence as the wasting, and His Spirit is doing it now, at this hour, in the third chair in from the aisle.

Both. Not instead. Both.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, sitting, at whatever length your breath allows. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and this standing was given to you rather than earned on a good day, so nothing here depends on how much air you have. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live, never the strength behind the voice. And whatever He does about your body, in whatever way and whenever, the outcome is His and it is not on your list tonight.

  1. Pencil mark in bar thirty-four, you are an accurate record and you are not the whole record. Scripture says the outer person is wasting away and the inner person is being renewed day by day, and I say in the name of Jesus that both of those were written about the same evening.
  2. Arithmetic I do in the car afterwards, you do not get to total me up. The word keeps two columns about me and God has never once done His accounts in one, so the sum you keep reaching is not a sum He recognizes.
  3. Lord, You are renewing me today, on the same day the breath got shorter, and I am not calling that an exchange. It is written that You do this day by day, and Your Spirit is at work in the part of me no scan has ever reached. I thank You, because I am more Yours than I was five years ago, and I am saying that out loud in an ordinary room tonight.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
