Two mugs of tea going cold on the low table because both of them started talking and neither of them noticed.
Her friend comes on Tuesdays. That is the arrangement and it has been the arrangement for a year and a half, and it is one of the four or five things holding the week together.
Fifty-one.
Twice this month somebody has quoted it at her. Once at the door of the church and once, worse, in a text message from a woman she loves.
Our light affliction, which is but for a moment.
She knows the verse. She has known it since she was a child. She could quote it back.
And what she has never said out loud, not even to the friend who comes on Tuesdays, is that the word light in that sentence has done something to her, and it has taken about a year for the something to finish happening. Because if this is light, then whatever is going on in her is a failure of proportion. Other people carry light things without their weeks falling apart. She cannot carry a light thing. So the problem is not the load, the problem must be her.
If somebody has sent you that verse in a text message, you know they meant it beautifully, and you know that you read it four times.
Read the sentence he wrote it against
The weight first and whole, because on this site the honest paragraph comes before the good one and it never gets shortened.
What this costs is not the affliction, which is doing what it does. It is the second injury, which is a verdict on your proportion. It costs you the ability to trust your own sense of how heavy things are, which is a strange and disorienting thing to lose. It costs the verse, which was a good verse and is now a stone. It costs the text message from a woman you love, which sits in your phone. And it costs you a conclusion, formed slowly over a year, that the problem is not the load.
I am not calling that small and I am not putting it beside anybody else's, because on this site there is no ranking of what people carry and there never will be. Any word from God that needs your year and a half made lighter first is not one Scripture speaks and not one the Holy Spirit has ever carried.
And plainly, before anything else: if the conclusion about proportion has taken you somewhere darker, as far as thinking everybody would have simpler weeks without the whole business of you, tell one living person today. Your doctor, the friend who comes on Tuesdays, or a crisis line where you live, 988 by call or text in the United States and its equivalent wherever you are. Scripture asks nobody to hold that alone, and the Holy Spirit has always moved through people who turn up on the same day every week for a year and a half.
Now, the verse. All of it, including the half that never gets sent in a message.
For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.2 Corinthians 4:17
Read the second half.
A far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory. Paul does not say the affliction is light and leave it there. He says it in the same breath as the thing he is measuring it against, and the thing he is measuring it against is described with the word weight.
The word light in that verse only exists because there is something on the other side of the balance. It is a comparative statement. Remove the second half and it becomes a description of your Tuesday, which is exactly what happens when somebody sends you half of it in a text.
You are holding half a sentence and it was never designed to stand on its own. Second Corinthians 4:17 puts light and weight in one line as two ends of one comparison, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a verse that has been used on you and hands it back whole.
Now, who wrote it, because that settles the tone. Two chapters earlier the same man writes that he was pressed out of measure, above strength, so that he despaired even of life. That is the same pen. He is not a man with a high threshold telling people to buck up. He is a man who wrote down, in a letter that survived, that he had given up on living.
And that man is the one who uses the word light, comparatively, about the same kind of thing he had just said crushed him.
You have the word from somebody who had already written that he despaired of life. That is written into 2 Corinthians 1:8, and His Spirit in you is the one who makes both sentences by one hand hold together without either being deleted.
Now let me be exact about what this does not say, because a year and a half of true things have already been quoted at you.
It does not tell you the affliction is ending. But for a moment is measured against eternity and not against your calendar, and I am not going to convert it into a date, because what God does with your body is His, in His own way.
And it does not tell you the woman who sent the text was wrong. She sent you something true. She sent half of it, at speed, because that is the half that fits in a message, and this site is not going to prosecute somebody for loving you clumsily by text.
You were never told by Paul that what you carry is light on its own. Scripture puts the word inside a comparison with a weight on the other end, and the same Spirit who inspired it is the one who carries the whole verse into a room with two cold mugs in it.
Second Corinthians 4:17 sets a light affliction against a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, and both ends of that comparison are real, and the Holy Spirit in you is the guarantee that neither one has been deleted.
Look at what that leaves standing. It leaves your week and the year and a half. It leaves the text message in your phone, which you can read again or delete, and I am promising you nothing about your body, because I would rather hand you a sentence that is still true next Tuesday than a warm one that is not true in this room.
But it takes the verdict off. You concluded, over about a year, that if the thing is light then your inability to carry it is a failure in you. Paul never made that claim. He put the word light beside the word weight in one line, as a ratio, and he did it as a man who had written two chapters earlier that he despaired of life.
It is already the whole sentence, and the half you were sent was never all of it. The word says a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, and the Holy Spirit is the deposit on the end of the balance that is heavier.
So drink the tea even though it has gone cold. Your friend is still here and neither of you noticed the mugs, and the verse has a second half.
Declare this over yourself
This hope is yours in Christ and it is not a verdict on how well you are carrying this week. What God does about the affliction is His to decide, in His own way, and nothing below asks Him for a date or predicts one. Second Corinthians 4:17 is the ground under these three lines, and the Holy Spirit is the one who hands back a verse that was quoted at you in halves.
- Word light that has come at me twice this month, you are one end of a comparison and you have no authority to be a verdict on my week. Scripture puts you in the same line as a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory. Arrive in a text message; you were never sent to stand alone.
- Conclusion that the problem must therefore be me, you are put out of this room in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a ratio from becoming an accusation, so a comparison to eternity is not a measurement of my back. A woman I love sent me half of it; Paul wrote both halves in one breath.
- Father, You had a man who wrote that he despaired of life put the word light on one side and the word weight on the other. I am saying what I carry out loud, and then, separately, what You have said is coming. The tea has gone cold and neither of us noticed; the heavier end of that balance is Yours.
2 Corinthians 4:17
