The hall has been done up with about four hundred meters of bunting and somebody's fairy lights and a paper tablecloth that keeps trying to leave with the breeze from the propped door. Long tables. Plates going down the line hand over hand. A boy under the table with a bowl of trifle he has definitely not been given permission for.
She is at the end of the near table with her stick hooked over the back of the chair, where it has to go, because if it goes on the floor somebody will trip on it and she will spend the rest of the evening apologizing.
Nine years, this thing has been taking pieces off her. It took the stairs first, then the car, then the job, then most of a friendship group who did not know what to say and stopped saying anything. Tonight she is out, and she is glad, and she is doing the arithmetic she always does about how long she can stay before the whole of tomorrow goes.
Then the music starts and people get up, and her cousin's husband comes past, and he crouches down by her chair so he does not have to shout, and he puts a hand on her shoulder and says it. It will all be worth it one day, love. Every bit of it.
And he means it. That is the thing she wants to be understood. He is not being glib and he is not brushing her off, he loves her, he has driven her to two appointments this year. He says it and he squeezes her shoulder and he goes off to dance with his daughter, and she is left at the end of the table with the sentence sitting in her lap like a parcel nobody wanted to open.
Because it is either the most important sentence anybody has said to her all year, or it is nothing at all, and she genuinely does not know which. Worth it. Worth it against what. Who is holding the other side, and what is on it, and has anybody actually weighed this, or is it just a thing people say to somebody with a stick.
You may have had that sentence said to you. And if you have, I want to do something with it that nobody usually does. I want to weigh it properly. Not defend it. Weigh it.
Two real weights, and He is the one holding the beam
First, let me put something down that nobody else in that hall is going to say.
Nine years of losing is heavy. Not heavy for you. Heavy. It is not made lighter by the fact that other people have it worse, and it is not made lighter by being borne well, and it is certainly not made lighter by anybody deciding, from the outside, that it must be. Nothing on this page is going to shrink it, and there is no sentence coming later where I quietly do that to you after building your trust. If a thing is only bearable once it has been made small, it was never actually answered. It was talked past.
So we are going to leave your weight exactly the size it is. Then we are going to look at what God put on the other side.
And plainly, before another word: if the weighing has taken you somewhere darker, as far as thinking the people around you would carry less without you here, tell one living person today. Your doctor, one friend who will sit down and not need the whole story, or a crisis line where you live, 988 by call or text in the United States and its equivalent wherever you are. Scripture asks nobody to hold that alone, and the Holy Spirit has always moved through people who stay in the room.
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.Romans 8:18
Now read it as the weighing sentence it is, because that is what it is.
Not worth comparing is not the same as not worth much. Paul is not saying your side of the scale is empty. He is a man who kept a list of his own sufferings and read it out when he had to, beatings and shipwrecks and a night and a day in the open sea, and he never once described any of it as nothing. He knows what weights are. What he is saying is that he has put the two things on the beam and the other side has gone all the way down and stayed there, so far down that comparison stops being a useful activity.
And the word that goes on the other side is the one this whole message turns on. Glory. In the language underneath it, the word for glory is a word that means weight. Heaviness. Substance. Something with real mass to it, the opposite of a thing that floats away. So the comparison is not between something solid and something vague. It is weight against weight, and the heavier one is the one you cannot see yet.
So take this as something already true rather than something coming: you are carrying a real weight, and God has already weighed both sides, and He is not asking you to pretend about either. That is not me being kind to you. Scripture puts a word meaning heaviness on the other side of the scale, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes an old comparison and makes it stand up in a hall with the bunting coming loose.
There is a second verse everybody quotes at this, and I want to handle it honestly rather than skip it. Paul writes about a momentary light affliction producing an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 2 Corinthians 4:17. And here is what matters about that sentence: it is a man's description of his own back, his own beatings, his own body. It is said from inside, by the sufferer, looking at what he has seen. It has never once been a verdict for one person to hand down about somebody else's life, and I am not going to say that word over your nine years. Only you get to, and only if it ever becomes true in your mouth, and there is no timetable on that and no mark against you if it never comes.
What I will say over you is what God has said. And it is this: the glory in that verse is being revealed, and the older English has it revealed in us rather than merely to us, which means the destination is not a place you are shown. It is something done in you.
So hear it, plainly. You are the one this is being revealed in. Not the version of you from before the diagnosis, not a repaired copy issued later: you, the one at the end of the table with the stick on the chair back. That stands written in Romans 8, and His Spirit is the one who makes an unseen weight press down on a real evening in a real hall.
And I am not going to tell you anything about your body. Nothing on this page predicts what happens next in it, this year or ever, because nobody writing to you knows and pretending otherwise would be a lie dressed as comfort. What is settled is settled somewhere else entirely, and it does not depend on a scan.
One last thing, and it is the smallest thing in the message. Jesus said the trust it takes to move a mountain is the size of a seed, Matthew 17:20, and the seed does not push. It speaks. Which means the question you have been carrying does not need to be resolved in your feelings before you can open your mouth. You can say what is true about both sides of the scale out loud tonight, in your own voice, at whatever volume this evening has left you.
You have the standing to do it. Romans 8:18 gave it to you in Christ rather than in a good week, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries a sentence, not the strength of the person saying it.
So let us put both weights on the table, tonight, in this room, and let neither one be shaved.
Right now, as you read this, what you are carrying is fully real and fully seen, and the glory God has spoken about is heavier still, and both of those are true in the same sentence without either one having to apologize to the other. That is not a way of looking at things. Scripture uses a word meaning weight for what is coming and refuses to call your side of the beam empty, and His Spirit is the one who makes that land in a body that is tired tonight.
And nobody is asking you to feel it. Feeling it is not the entrance requirement and never has been. You are permitted to say the whole truth out loud. Romans 8:18 is the ground under it and the Holy Spirit is in the room while you say it: this is heavy, and He has weighed it, and He has put something on the other side that goes all the way down.
You have two real weights and God is holding the beam between them. Romans 8:18 compares them without calling either one nothing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a comparison from turning into a dismissal.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, sitting, in whatever voice tonight has left. The standing under them was given to you in Christ and never earned on a good week, so they are agreement rather than effort, and Scripture is the ground while the Holy Spirit is what makes them live. Whatever He does, and whenever, is His to decide, and nothing here says one word about what happens to your body.
- Weight I am actually carrying, you are real and God has never once asked me to call you light. He does the weighing Himself, and He has put a glory on the other side that goes all the way down and stays there. You keep your true name in this house, and you do not get the last reading.
- Fear that God is only humouring me, you do not know the first thing about Him. He came into a body and was nailed to a piece of wood, so in the name of Jesus I refuse your account of Him: nothing about this is being weighed from a distance. You do not speak for the One who is holding the beam.
- Lord, You weighed both sides Yourself and You are not asking me to pretend that this is nothing. Glory is a weight in Your own language, and You said it is being revealed in me and not in some other version of me. I am saying what I carry out loud tonight, and then I am saying what You have said, and I am leaving them both standing.
