The Curtain He Stopped Opening

There was a week in February when he stopped pulling the curtain all the way back, and he could not tell you which day it was.

It was practical at first. The light came in hard off the wet road and it hurt his eyes, and the chair had to go where the chair had to go, and half open was enough for the television. That is all it was. A man making a small adjustment for a couple of weeks.

Then March happened, and then the year did what a year does when nobody is counting it, and the curtain has been half drawn since, and now the room has a shape and the shape includes that curtain being where it is.

He still gets the paper. He still knows the score. Denise from two doors down brings a casserole on Wednesdays and stays fifteen minutes, and he saves things up during the week to say to her, actual sentences, planned, because fifteen minutes is not long and he does not want to waste it on the weather.

What he cannot say to her, and what he has not said out loud to anybody at all, is the sentence that turns up around four in the afternoon. Which is: the man they all knew is not in this room. He has been put away somewhere. What is here is the part that still eats.

Seventy years old, in the chair, in the half light, with the paper folded to the crossword he has not started.

If you have your own version of that four o'clock sentence, then you know it does not arrive as despair. It arrives as an ordinary observation, and that is the thing about it that frightens you.

Hidden is a place, and somebody chose it

First the weight, and I am not going to walk fast past it, because walking fast past it is how most of what gets said to a man in a chair goes wrong.

It costs the road. It costs the ordinary daily proof that you exist in the world, the nod at the shop, the man at the counter who knows what you want, the whole scaffolding of small recognitions that were holding something up without your ever noticing they were. It costs the version of you that other people carried around, which was a real thing and is now mostly gone. It costs you the crossword you do not start. And it costs you a four o'clock sentence that arrives calmly and sounds like a fact.

That is not a small thing and I will not call it one. I am also not going to set it beside anybody else's, because ranking suffering is a thing people do to end a conversation and there is no ranking anywhere on this site.

And I want to say this plainly before another word, because a man alone in a room deserves it said plainly. If that four o'clock sentence has ever gone further, as far as thinking that everybody concerned would have a simpler time if you were not here, tell one living person today. Denise on Wednesday is not soon enough. Your doctor, or a friend on the phone, or a crisis line where you live, 988 by call or text in the United States and its equivalent wherever you are. Scripture nowhere asks a man to carry that on his own in a half lit room, and the Holy Spirit has always moved through people who turn up at a door.

Now, Colossians. Paul is writing to people whose lives had gone quiet and strange, and he says something that is either a shrug or the strongest sentence in the letter, depending on how you read it.

For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.Colossians 3:3-4

Hid. That is the word. Not lost. Not diminished. Not paused.

Here is what a man in a chair needs to know about that word. Hidden is not the same as gone, and it is not the same as neglected either. You hide what you are keeping. Nobody hides trash. A thing is put away because somebody has decided its value does not depend on being on display, and the deciding is the whole point, and the deciding was not done by the road outside or by the people who stopped calling.

You are hidden, and hidden is somewhere rather than nowhere. Colossians 3:3 says your life is hid with Christ in God, and the Spirit who joined you to Him is the one who put it there, which means the room you are in has never once been the address of your life.

Look at the two words after hid. With Christ. Not in a drawer. Not in the past. In the same place He is, which is a phrase Paul uses on purpose, because he wants a person to understand that the storage arrangement is not a shelf but a Person.

And then, in God. Two containers, one inside the other, the way you put the good watch in a box and the box in a safe. Whatever you think has been mislaid about you is behind two doors and both of them are His.

You have your whole life stored in a place your legs have nothing to do with. That is written in Colossians 3:3, and the Holy Spirit who lives in you is the seal on the arrangement, so what got put away in February is not what got put away.

Now let me be exact about what this does not say. It does not say you are getting out of that house. It says nothing about your legs, your eyes, the road, or the spring. I am not going to tell you what next year holds because I do not know, and the men who talk confidently about that are talking about themselves. What God does with your body is His, in His own way, and I will not stand in for Him.

What it does say is that the man they all knew has not been dismantled. He has been put somewhere, deliberately, by someone who does not lose things.

You were kept, and keeping is a decision somebody made about you. Scripture says your life is hid with Christ in God, and His Spirit is the deposit on the day when what is hidden gets brought out, so the storing is not the end of the sentence, it is the middle of it.

Then verse four, and this is the part that gets skipped. When Christ appears, then shall ye also appear with him in glory. The same verb. He appears; you appear. Not a footnote to His appearing. In the sentence with Him.

Whatever you think has been packed away is coming out in the same motion as Christ coming out. That is the arrangement. Not a man in a chair being remembered kindly at the end. A man appearing, in glory, in the same clause as the Son of God.
