The Envelope With The Window In It

This message is for A woman of forty-seven on long-term sick leave who has received the letter beginning the process, and has started to think of herself as a matter being handled rather than a person being loved.

It comes on a Thursday, which is the day the mail runs late on that street, and it sits on the hall table until half past six because she can see the window in it from the stairs and she knows what a window in an envelope means.

Her daughter comes in, drops a bag, says something about a bus, picks it up, reads the front of it, puts it back down flat and says nothing at all. Which is worse.

Inside it is polite. Everybody in the whole thing has been polite. There is a phrase in the second paragraph about ongoing absence and a phrase in the fourth about next steps, and a date, and a name at the bottom of somebody she has met twice.

Twenty-two years she gave that place. She trained half the floor. She knows where the fault is in the west stairwell and which door sticks in wet weather and the name of the man who empties the trash cans on Fridays and both his kids.

None of that is in the letter. The letter has a reference number.

And she stands in her own hall with her coat still on and understands, with a clarity that is almost restful, that she has become a matter. Not a person somebody is worried about. A matter, being handled, correctly, by people who are following the right steps in the right order.

If you have ever stood in a hall like that, you know that nobody in the story did anything wrong, and you know that this does not help even slightly.

Somebody put their mark on you before the file was opened

I want to weigh this before I say anything about God, because on this site the order matters more than almost anything else and getting it the other way round is how a good word turns into an insult.

What this costs is not the job. It is the slow discovery that you are describable. That there exists, somewhere in a building, a version of your whole life that fits on one side of a page and reads accurately and contains nothing that matters. It costs the twenty-two years. It costs the confidence that being good at something protects you. It costs the specific loneliness of a hall at half past six with a coat still on. And it costs you the energy to explain any of that to anybody, which is why you have not.

I am not going to tell you it could be worse. Nothing on this site puts your load beside anybody else's, because a scale like that has never once helped a person and it is not what Scripture does with suffering. This is heavy. It is yours. It is real, and Scripture never once asks a person to shrink it before the Holy Spirit will speak over them.

And plainly, before we go on: if the last few weeks have gone past heaviness into something darker, into thinking the household would run more smoothly without you in it, tell one living person today. A doctor, one friend who will come and sit at that table, or a crisis line where you live, 988 by call or text in the United States and its equivalent everywhere else. Reaching for help is not a small faith. It is the right response to a real weight, and God has always worked through people who show up.

Now. Look at what Paul says happened to you, and notice when he says it happened.

In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.Ephesians 1:13-14

Sealed. Past tense. Done at a moment, not accumulating over a career.

A seal in that world was not decoration and it was not encouragement. It was a legal act. Wax, a ring, a mark pressed into it, and from that instant the thing carried the authority of whoever owned the ring. It said this is mine, it is concluded, and nobody along the road opens it.

You were sealed, and it happened at a moment nobody in that office was present for. Ephesians 1:13 puts the sealing in the past and names the Holy Spirit as the seal itself, which means the mark on you is not a document somebody can file but a Person somebody would have to remove.

Read the next phrase, because that is the one that does the work in a hall on a Thursday. The Spirit is called the earnest. The deposit. The first part of a sum, handed over as proof that the rest is coming, and in the world Paul borrowed the word from it was the same word used for an engagement gift. It is not a sample. It is the beginning of the actual thing.

You have the first part of your inheritance already inside you, and it was given before anybody used the word process. That is written into Ephesians 1:14, and the Spirit named there is not a bonus for good performance, He is the down payment God chose to make and has never asked to have back.

Now let me be careful about what this does not say, because you have had enough carefully worded documents this month.

It says nothing about the outcome of the process. Not a word. It does not tell you what the meeting will decide, it does not promise your health back, and it does not promise the job, and I am not going to promise you any of those on God's behalf, because I do not know and neither does anybody who tells you otherwise in a confident voice. What He is doing in your body and your working life is His, in His own way and on His own schedule.

What the verse settles is the other question. The one you did not ask out loud in the hall. Am I still a person, or have I become a matter.

You are a person carrying a Person, and the Holy Spirit was placed in you as God's own guarantee. Second Corinthians 1:22 says the same thing in different words, that He sealed us and gave the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts, and Scripture does not repeat itself for decoration.

The letter is accurate. It is also, on the only question that matters, not competent to comment.

The breakthrough

God sealed you with His Holy Spirit and gave Him as the deposit on everything else, in the past tense, at a moment, and He has not asked for the deposit back.

Notice what that leaves standing. It leaves the letter on the table and the date in the fourth paragraph. It leaves your body doing whatever it is doing. It makes no claim at all about the meeting, and I would rather put one true sentence in your hands than a comforting one that falls apart in six weeks.

What it does is take the definition out of the building. That office is entitled to make a decision about a role. It was never entitled to say what you are, and it has not said it, and it could not, because the question was closed by somebody else in a different register altogether.

It is already settled who you belong to, and no reference number appears anywhere in the transaction. The word says you were sealed with the Spirit of promise and that He is the earnest of the inheritance, and His Spirit in you is what makes the phrase mine mean something legally rather than sentimentally.

So you can go back into that hall. Not with the letter answered, because it is not yours to answer tonight. With the other thing settled, which was settled first and settled longer ago.

Declare this over yourself

This standing is yours in Christ and it is not a summary of how your review went. What God does with your health and your work is His to decide, in His own way, and nothing below asks Him for a date or predicts one. Ephesians 1:13-14 is the ground under these three lines, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a sealed thing and makes a person able to say it out loud.

  1. Letter on the hall table, you are a stage in a process and you have no standing to say one word about who I am. Scripture says I was sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise at a moment that office never attended. Keep your reference number; I have a mark.
  2. Fear that I have quietly become a matter, you are put out of this house in the name of Jesus. The Spirit was given to me as the earnest of an inheritance and not as a reward for attendance, so the file describes a role and it does not describe me. Twenty-two years are mine to grieve; my name is not up for review.
  3. Father, You pressed Your own mark on me before anybody opened a file, and You have never asked for the deposit back. I am standing in my hall reading out the older document with my coat still on. The letter is polite and accurate; You are the one who said whose I am.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
